Harry Potter Birthday Party – Brisbane Family Photographer

I’m going to start by saying that I wish I kept this for Benjamin’s 10th birthday because there is no way I can top it! This party was truly epic! Invitations were sent by owl post. They set the scene for the theme and all the kids were really excited.

As the guests arrived, they were sorted into their houses. We baked cup cakes and filled them with coloured icing. We then mixed them all up on the tray. The kids each had to put on the sorting hat and take a bite out of the cupcake. When they reviled their icing colour, they were given a tie to match their house colour. They all thought this was awesome… especially as they then got to eat their cup cake!

Next on the wizarding list was a trip to Olivanders. Of course the wand always chooses the wizard, so each child had to put on a blind fold, turn three times and choose their wand. These had been pre-made by me in the weeks leading up to the party. The kids then got to paint them however they liked. They took these home as part of their gifts.

No wizarding school would be complete without potions class so that was up next. We had three potions to complete. First up was making poly juice potion. We added different flavoured cordial, soft drink and popping candy to our concoction. Best bit was the kids were able to drink it afterward. Next up was making Basilisk’s! This was an extreme hit with everyone! There are plenty of tutorials on how to make this  but basically you take some sand and pour some rubbing alcohol on. You then mix baking soda and sugar together and add it on top of the sand. Light it with a long stick and watch the Basilisk grow!.  Finally we preformed the wingardium leviosa spell. We went inside for this as it’s best done somewhere there isn’t lots of wind. For this, I took tea bags and emptied them. I then cut them in half. The kids lit the top, said “Wingarduim Leviosa” and the tea bag floated. Needless to say potions was the favourite class of the day!

The kids were now starving so we headed to the great hall table to feast on dragon wings, witches hats and professor sprouts garden veges. Topped up with chocolate frogs, golden snitches and of course a monster book of monsters cake.

After refuelling, it was time for a game of Quidditch. As part of their take home gift, each child received their own broom which they used to play in the quidditch world cup. The rules were, every player must keep one hand on their broom at all times and each hoop had a different score. 5 points for the lowest, 10 for the next highest and 15 points for the highest goal. After a preliminary game the final was held between Hufflepuff and Slytherin with Slytherin taking out the world cup. The goal posts were made by spray painting broomsticks and hoola hoops gold.

As the day was coming to an end (3 hrs in) the last activity was to head to Professor Sprouts garden where the kids received a little talk about the man eating creatures they were about to re-pot. Professor Sprout (aka my mum) may have gone a little overboard on the details as every kid was then too scared to touch the miniature Venus fly traps we had for them to take home 🙂 They sure did love using a stick though to make them close their mouths.

It was a lot of work but sooooo much fun planning and having this party. Everyone had a ball and even some of the parents didn’t do the usual drop off and go as they wanted to stay and watch the fun. Feel free to PM me if you would like any further info or instruction on how I organised any of the activities. I’d love to help out.  And lastly for my favourite quote by the humble Albus Dumbledore…

“Happiness can be found in the darkest of places…

If one remembers to turn on the light”..
